A BRIEF U.S. HISTORY from other sources would doubtless have it that in 1945, superpowers replaced empires, 'cold war' replaced the hot variety and influence replaced invasion. Of course to accept this you must also accept that history happens and is not written.
[That for instance, the quintessential photographic icon of American Victory, 'Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima', is truer in its second version - the one they found the bigger flag for - than its spontaneous, but less inspiring first.]
