GRAHAM BUDGETT: BERLIN BEI NACHT

All around the dominant Europa-Center 'post-modern' additions to already severely-modernised architecture celebrate Berlin's three-quarter millenium - and anticipate the christian one - with an optimism that only excess can generate. One feature, and one only, rescues this very 'modern' building from relegation to the nether-regions of architectural 'chic': its roof-garden.

Here, a giant revolving blue-and-white-neon Mercedes-'star' casts a cold blue light upon cold blue bars. This panoptikon/prison-cell/penthouse is a materialisation of Reason itself, and not, as it may appear, mere post-modernist folly. On the contrary, it is innocent perhaps only of aesthetic pretense. The cage is functional, supposed to halt the flight of would-be escapees; it reminds us that, here too, freedom is conditional.

But in this city of Berlin, where many symbols have been sent toppling from their architectural pedestals, it's possible that the bars also serve a less explicit purpose... aber das ist mir schnuppe!
